Periodontal (Gum) Treatment

About This Treatment

Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, yet it is largely preventable and treatable when caught early. Dr. Chang's periodontic training — developed over 28 years of practice — allows her to diagnose and treat the full spectrum of gum disease in-house, from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis requiring deep cleaning and surgical intervention. Treatment typically begins with a thorough assessment of pocket depths, bone levels, and plaque patterns, followed by a personalised course of scaling, root planing, and maintenance. Because Dr. Chang also manages your restorative and implant care, periodontal health is always considered as part of your broader treatment picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue only and is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved brushing and flossing. Periodontitis occurs when the infection spreads below the gumline and begins destroying the bone and ligaments that support the teeth — this stage causes permanent damage but can be halted with appropriate treatment.

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is performed under local anaesthesia so the procedure itself is comfortable. Some tenderness and sensitivity in the days following treatment is normal and typically resolves within a week. Dr. Chang will advise on post-treatment care to minimise discomfort.

Most patients with a history of periodontitis are placed on a 3–4 month maintenance schedule rather than the standard 6-month recall, because the bacteria responsible for gum disease can re-colonise treated pockets within that timeframe. Dr. Chang will set your recall interval based on the severity of your case and your response to initial treatment.
